Zero-Drop
Having the heel and toe on the same level rather than an elevated heel is crucial for our tiny human as they lay the neurological framework for optimal gait and proprioception. This “zero-drop” coupled zero arch support mimics the bare foot on earth, encouraging proper alignment and the development of the approximate 26 bones, 33 joints, 100+ muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the foot.
Foot-Shaped
Conventional children’s shoes confine and deform feet and lead to lasting motor dysfunction. This isn’t a blame game; it's about educating ourselves and choosing to do better for our kids. Wide toe boxes are good, but sandals are BETTER, allowing total freedom for the toes to spread naturally or grip tightly, promoting proper alignment of the bones of the foot.
Minimal
Unbelievably thin soles (~3mm). This means enhanced sensory input, under foot feedback and greater environmental awareness = less trips and falls.
Lightweight
The average pair of size 7T shoes weigh in at 20 oz, while the Sagebrush sandals float at only 3 oz! This keeps your child’s motor behavior and learning beautifully unimpeded.
Natural Materials
Our sandals are made from full-grain leather and optional Vibram™ rubber sole. Let's stop clothing our children with plastic! Our feet have unique skin with specialized vascular structures that increase their ability to absorb what they come in contact with, so we made sure it's absolutely bio-compatible!
Handcrafted
Intentionally and lovingly designed by Loren Fjord, each of these unique sandals is cut, glued, pressed, sewn and packaged by his or his wife's hands.

Each sandal is handcrafted in the basement workshop of our home in Idaho, USA and each and every component of our shoes is intentionally sourced from small USA to businesses!
Non-Toxic
The adhesive used for attaching sole to insole is a water-based, non-toxic contact cement made in the USA.
Why Sandals?
Sandals are the original footwear, spanning ancient civilizations such as the Egyptians and Greeks to the modern day. Their minimalist design embodies a profound sense of ease and liberation, affording the foot unrestricted movement and an opportunity to foster natural strength and coordination.

The Fjords

A shoe born of a desire to honor the foot, the child and their future. My name is Loren Fjord, I am a father, husband to the lovely Heather Fjord, craftsperson, human movement specialist, and the founder of Human Wild LLC.

Being a DIY-kinda-guy and having practiced leather working over the years, once our son Rowan approached the stage of walking, I was excited to design and craft his first pairs of walking shoes. They were to be foot-shaped, zero-drop, protective but not restrictive, made of non-toxic, natural materials, durable and lastly, handsome.

After experimenting with a few different styles, each with unique functionality for various seasons and use, Rowan crash-tested them throughout our adventures in his second year of life. The shoes elicited commentary everywhere we went, and my wife and I soon realized how unique these shoes were, even when compared to other children’s barefoot-style shoes on the market, so we decided to open up the opportunity for any parents, family or friends with a kindred vision for the little ones in their lives to order and purchase them.

We are starting with size 7T sandals (for now), which is a safe bet they'll be walking shoe size. As a side note, I believe children shouldn’t wear shoes until they are walking and even then, only when necessary; not all spaces in the modern landscape are safe for our kiddos to roam barefoot and occasionally there are places in nature that need a little protection, too.

Our plan is to expand our offering to 5T,6T & 8T once we get enough market support 🇺🇸🦶🏼❤️.
